Dental emergency in Algiers: finding a dentist open now, in the evening or at the weekend

Toothache does not pick its moment. It arrives on a Thursday evening, a Friday or a public holiday, when most practices are closed. In Algiers the question then becomes very concrete: where do I find a dentist open now?

What counts as a real dental emergency?

Not every dental pain is an emergency, but some situations should not wait until Monday:

  • Intense pain that stops you sleeping or eating, often a sign of pulp infection or an abscess.
  • Swelling of the cheek, gum or neck, with or without fever: an abscess spreading.
  • Trauma — a tooth broken, displaced or knocked out after a fall or a blow.
  • Bleeding that does not stop after an extraction.

One case belongs in hospital emergency: swelling that makes breathing or swallowing difficult, or a high fever with a swollen face. Then call the SAMU (16) or go to the nearest university hospital's emergency department.

A knocked-out tooth: minutes count

For a permanent tooth knocked out whole after a blow, the chances of re-implanting it are good if a dentist sees it fast — ideally within the hour. Dental societies' guidance is constant: the tooth is held by the crown, never the root, is not rubbed, is kept moist in milk or saliva, and a dentist is seen immediately (American Association of Endodontists). A baby tooth is not re-implanted, but a visit is still useful to check the gum and neighbouring teeth.

Where to go in Algiers, at night or on Friday

Unlike pharmacies, there is no daily published on-call list for dentists. Three options in practice:

  • Dental practices open in the evening or on Saturday: more and more practices and dental centres in Algiers see patients late or at the weekend. The trick is knowing which ones, and whether they have room.
  • Hospital departments: the emergency departments of Algiers' university hospitals (stomatology, maxillofacial surgery) handle trauma and severe infections, day and night.
  • The duty pharmacy: while you wait for the appointment, the pharmacist can advise a suitable painkiller and point you in the right direction. The list of duty pharmacies in Algiers is updated every day on Yadoct.

Finding a dentist open right now, without phoning

This is where searching online saves precious time. On Yadoct, the dentists in Algiers page shows each practice's hours for the day, its consultation reasons and, when the practice runs its queue on Yadoct, the live state of its waiting line — open or closed, number being served, patients ahead of you. In seconds you see who is still consulting tonight and where the wait is reasonable, then you book online without creating an account, or take a remote ticket from the app. You can also filter by commune — Kouba, Hydra, Bab Ezzouar, Chéraga — to stay close to home.

While you wait for the dentist

A few facts, which do not replace the consultation: cold on the cheek limits swelling; chewing on the painful side makes the pain worse; a tablet placed directly on the gum burns the mucosa without relieving anything. And if the pain eases, the infection does not go away: the appointment is still needed.
