Medical certificate, vaccination record, eye and dental check: the back-to-school health checklist for parents in Algeria, and how to book before the September rush.

Back to school 2026 in Algeria: medical certificate, vaccines and your child’s health check

Every September the same queues form outside paediatric and family-medicine practices: certificates to sign, vaccines to catch up on, glasses to renew. Doing it in late August avoids the wait — and gives your child a school year that starts in good health.

The school medical certificate: when is it required?

Many schools ask for a medical certificate at first-year enrolment, at preschool entry or for sports. It confirms the child is fit for normal schooling and physical activity. Check the document list your school hands out: the certificate is usually issued by a general practitioner or a paediatrician during an ordinary consultation.

Are the vaccines up to date?

Back-to-school is the right time to open the health booklet and check that the boosters of the national vaccination schedule have been given. A missed booster is caught up without restarting the schedule — ask the doctor. Our detailed guide for parents: Children’s vaccination in Algeria.

Eyes, ears, teeth: the three useful checks

  • Eyesight: a child who squints at the board, sits close to the screen or complains of headaches at the end of the day deserves a check with an ophthalmologist. An uncorrected visual problem often shows up as school difficulties.
  • Hearing: repeated ear infections, a child who asks you to repeat or turns the volume up — an ENT opinion settles it.
  • Teeth: one visit a year to the dentist is enough to catch cavities before they hurt, especially at the age of permanent teeth.

Sleep, schoolbag, screens: back into the rhythm

A week before school starts, move bedtime earlier step by step: a primary-school child needs 9 to 11 hours of sleep. Limit evening screens, prepare a breakfast that lasts until break, and lighten the schoolbag — the weight carried should not exceed 10% of the child’s weight.

Signs that deserve a consultation

  • Unusual tiredness or persistent paleness.
  • Frequent headaches, especially late in the day.
  • Attention or reading difficulties that appear or worsen.
  • Strong anxiety about going back to school.

None of these is necessarily serious, but all of them are worth raising with the doctor rather than waiting for the first report card.
